The Chicago Community Trust Partner and Initiatives Volunteer Project

Project Type

Volunteer Partnership's Project

Date

July 2024

This past summer, I had the opportunity to collaborate with The Chicago Community Trust on a project that aimed to address the critical challenges facing underserved neighborhoods in Chicago. These communities were dealing with deteriorating housing, outdated infrastructure, and significant safety concerns. Our mission was to evaluate these issues and develop strategies to improve living conditions and promote safer, more sustainable communities.

I volunteered alongside The Trust’s partnerships and initiatives teams, where my role focused on conducting demographic research to understand the socio-economic factors affecting these neighborhoods. I analyzed data on race, income, and housing quality, which helped us form a comprehensive view of the systemic issues impacting these areas. Along with this research, I collaborated with the marketing team to create advertisements and communication strategies designed to raise public awareness of these problems, encouraging investment and support for the communities.

Beyond the marketing efforts, I fought for the creation of funding initiatives such as the Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities. I believed that addressing the safety issues required a dedicated financial initiative to support community-led safety projects. By advocating for these funding mechanisms, I helped to ensure that these underserved neighborhoods had the resources needed to drive real change on the ground.

The project’s outcomes were significant. Our communication strategies successfully brought attention to the challenges in these neighborhoods, sparking discussions about housing improvements, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced safety measures. Additionally, the creation of funding initiatives like the Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities provided vital financial backing to support community-driven solutions, empowering local organizations to take action.

This experience deepened my skills in community engagement, research, and marketing, while also showing the power of advocacy in driving necessary change.
